ROSKILDE, Denmark, 12th March, 2026

Stensborg A/S is proud to announce that we are leading a newly awarded Eurostars-funded research project, Volumetric Optical Roll-to-roll Technology for Extended Manufacturing (VORTEX), a 36-month collaborative initiative set to redefine how nano- and micro-structured optical components are manufactured at an industrial scale. This project has received funding from the Innovation Fund Denmark and the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme through the Eurostars-3 programme.

The VORTEX consortium brings together: HOLOEYE Photonics AG (Germany), University of Southern Denmark (SDU), and Stensborg A/S. Together, we will develop and commercialise the first-of-its-kind 4K UV-compatible phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) integrated directly into industrial roll-to-roll and roll-to-plate nanoimprint manufacturing systems.

Conventional nanoimprint and surface-relief technologies are limited to static 2.5D geometries requiring physical masters and retooling. VORTEX introduces dynamic, holographically controlled UV curing directly into continuous manufacturing platforms. The system is expected to deliver significantly improved energy efficiency through its phase-only optical design compared to existing volumetric fabrication approaches, reduced material waste and on-demand customisation without retooling, all within a competitive equipment price range.

“Our mission at Stensborg is to deliver efficient, high-throughput nanoimprint solutions that reduce resource consumption while expanding design freedom without compromising quality. With VORTEX, we are taking a decisive step toward fully programmable, industrial 3D manufacturing integrated directly into roll-based production.”

- Jan Stensborg, Stensborg - CEO & Founder

The project consortium brings together complementary expertise across hardware, software, and industrial integration:

Building on SDU’s already published work on ultrafast lossless and lensless 3D fabrication via compact phase-only digital holography, the partnership enables a one-of-a-kind breakthrough: scalable, industrial 3D volumetric fabrication integrated into continuous production systems. This capability opens new possibilities for next-generation optical and photonic components, including advanced micro-optics, AR/VR optical elements, photonic devices, microfluidic structures, and functional nanostructured surfaces.
