ROSKILDE, Denmark, 26th March, 2026
Stensborg is proud to announce its role in the COLOUR2FOIL project, funded through M-ERA.NET 3, a Horizon Europe ERA-NET Cofund initiative, with Danish co-funding from Innovation Fund Denmark. The project aims to develop customisable, efficient, and reliable coloured interlayers for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), advancing roll-to-roll (R2R) production of flexible, large-area foils with structural colour thin film stacks.
These thin-film stacks provide a pigment-free approach to solar panel colouration, with the ultimate goal of enabling seamless solar energy integration into urban architecture. This allows for aesthetically distinctive buildings without compromising energy output or design flexibility.
Stensborg contributes its core expertise in roll-to-roll nanoimprint lithography and is responsible for the nano-structuring of the optical diffuser foils at the heart of the technology. Combined with advanced optical modelling and thin-film deposition, this enables the production of micro- and nanostructured surfaces that minimise iridescence while maintaining transmission losses below 15%.
The project also explores real-time optical monitoring to ensure consistent quality and process control across high-volume nanoimprint lithography production lines. Unlike conventional batch-processed colouring technologies, roll-to-roll nanoimprinting enables continuous production of nano-scale surfaces with significantly higher throughput, lower material waste, and improved lifetime performance.
The project brings together an international consortium of European research and industry partners:
COLOUR2FOIL builds on the previous EUDP-funded ColorFoil project (2022-2025), where NIL-fabricated coloured PV interlayers were explored at proof-of-concept scale (read the project insights here). Following presentation of the results at the 2025 EU PVSEC, the new project advances this work by incorporating rigorous material durability testing, accelerated stress evaluation, and angular-dependent colour measurement tools for both indoor and outdoor use.
The project supports the EU Renovation Wave and Energy Performance of Buildings Directive by enabling cost-effective, energy-efficient, and aesthetically customisable BIPV systems. In doing so, it helps bridge the gap between advanced nanostructure solar research and high-volume, sustainable production.
