Cross-border Interreg project explores the eye as a diagnostic window for chronic disease, reinforcing Stensborg’s position at the intersection of nanoimprint lithography, photonics, and next-generation medical device manufacturing.

ROSKILDE, Denmark, 16th September, 2026

Stensborg A/S, a Danish deep-tech supplier of high-precision rolling nanoimprint lithography (RNIL) systems for photonics, energy, and life sciences manufacturing, confirmed its role as a network partner in HEALTHeye, a €1.5 million German-Danish research collaboration funded through the Interreg Deutschland-Danmark programme for a period between 2026–2029.

Coordinated by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Maik Rahlves at the University of Lübeck’s Institute for Biomedical Optics, in partnership with Priv.-Doz. Dr. Ramtin Rahmanzadeh of the Medical Laser Center Lübeck (MLL) and Prof. Jesper Glückstad at the University of Southern Denmark’s (SDU) Centre for Photonics Engineering, HEALTHeye investigates how the human eye can serve as a diagnostic window into systemic health. Combining biomedical optics, 3D digital holography, tear-fluid biosensing, and artificial intelligence, the project aims to progress diagnostics into a portable, home-monitoring system for chronic disease.

The project’s network partner group brings together a cross-border mix of research institutions, clinical centres, and industry, including Novo Nordisk A/S, EUROIMMUN, UKSH Eye Clinic Lübeck, DFKI Lübeck, PhotonicNet, Odense University Hospital, Science Ventures Denmark, and Stensborg A/S. This consortium reflects the scale of ambition behind the initiative to move eye-based diagnostics out of the clinic and into the home, particularly for patients in rural and cross-border regions of Northern Germany and Southern Denmark.

Why It Matters for Stensborg

HEALTHeye sits at the convergence of two of Stensborg’s core application markets: photonics and life sciences.

As the researchers work to translate laboratory-scale biomedical optics and micro-diagnostic concepts into manufacturable, portable devices, Stensborg’s patented roll-to-roll (R2R) and roll-to-plate (R2P) nanoimprint platforms represent exactly the kind of industrial-scale replication technology that can carry such innovations to market: sub-100 nm feature replication, high template lifetimes, and compatibility with microfluidic/optical structures.

As a network partner, Stensborg contributes its nanoimprint lithography expertise and manufacturing perspective, supporting the shared goal of moving next-generation diagnostic technologies from research to real-world, scalable healthcare solutions.

“Working alongside partners like Novo Nordisk, the University of Lübeck, and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) on a project that advances diagnostics from a new method is a natural extension of what we do every day: turning nanoscale precision into industrial-scale impact. HEALTHeye is exactly the kind of application-driven challenge our roll-to-roll nanoimprint platform was built for”

- Jan Stensborg, CEO and Founder, Stensborg A/S

HEALTHeye is one of eleven projects sharing €15.3 million in the latest Interreg Deutschland-Danmark funding round, part of a wider ~€94 million ERDF allocation to German-Danish cooperation for 2021–2027.
